Hawks avoid nuclear option to land Devin Vassell in trade proposal

For his final suggestion, Hughes goes with the nuclear option, trading Trae Young in a package that nets the Hawks their own first-round picks back (i.e. the ability to tank) from the San Antonio Spurs.

As a bonus, they would also receive a useful two-way player in swingman Devin Vassell.

“If things go sideways early, and the Hawks determine the Trae Young era has run its course, the most logical trade partner is the one who has several of their first-round picks,” Hughes wrote. “Vassell would help match salary, sure, but his offensive skills would pair nicely in the backcourt with the defensive-minded Daniels. Young for Vassell, more matching salary and several first-rounders could reposition the Hawks for a quick rebuild.”

A deal like this is more likely in the offseason. And the Hawks’ offseason moves were seemingly geared toward surrounding Young with the proper supporting cast.

Instead, the Hawks could offer Hunter along with Larry Nance Jr. for Vassell, though they would be unlikely to get their picks back in such a scenario.

Vassell is starting a five-year, $135 million contract. But the Hawks would still save roughly $3 million in this deal. Moving Nace may not be in the Hawks’ plans. But they have to be open to it with the veteran in the final year of his contract.

Whether or not including Nance – who has drawn trade interest – in a deal for Vassell is wise is a different story.

But losing him in free agency for free next summer would be less than ideal.
