DeMarre vs. LeBron

No Thabo Sefolosha, no problem. DeMarre Carroll has a chance to make a real name for himself as he will likely draw a bulk of the time checking arguably the best player on the planet in LeBron James. Offensively, Carroll has really shined for the Hawks in this post season run. He is averaging 17.1 points per game and 6.8 rebounds. His shooting efficiency has been off the charts, posting percentages through 12 games of 53/42/81. Carroll is shooting 66% from less than 10 feet and 45% on the catch and shoot.

On the other side of the ball, Carroll has posted a playoff defensive rating of 99 while chipping in a steal per game. Carroll is a very good wing defender and just what the doctor ordered with LeBron coming to town. Jimmy Butler struggled with LeBron down low. DeMarre who is similar in size to Butler will have his work cut out for him.

Carroll who is holding players he is guarding to 44% per game is headed into free agency and really has a chance to get paid after this assignment. This likely is the most important matchup of the series.

LeBron James has been on a tear this post season. He is lighting it up on the stat sheet with some really solid numbers. 26.5 points per game, 10.2 rebounds, and 7.9 assists to be exact. His shooting percentages aren’t as well rounded as they have been at 42/14/77. James is also averaging 4.6 turnovers, something Carroll will try and exploit. With LeBron struggling mightily from downtown, if possible, the Hawks should try and limit his opportunities to outside as much as possible. This is easier said than done.

James has a very easy time getting to the line in this league. He is currently shooting almost seven free throws per game. He is very tough to defend as his dribble penetration consists of barreling through the lane to draw contact. Players either have to clear out of the way, or else he’s on the line. Expect to see more of this as it provides instant offense. James is always strong defensively, allowing players to shoot at around 43%.
