The Atlanta Hawks have been impressive early in the preseason. It’s tough to judge preseason basketball, and know if what you’re witnessing is actually meaningful, but the Hawks are 2-0 and that’s better than 0-2. They’ll take it. Individual performances have been scattered, but there have been some positive things to take away from the victories over the Cleveland Cavaliers and New Orleans Pelicans.

Edy Tavares looks like he may be able to contribute much earlier than anticipated. Jeff Teague was completely in control, looking to be in midseason form against the Cavs. Al Horford is shooting (and making) three-pointers. If that keeps up then keep your ears out for the sound of gentle weeping from every head coach in the Eastern Conference not named Mike Budenholzer.
Still, it’s just the preseason so let’s not assume things will be the same when the Hawks take the court in a game that counts. But, they still have to play the games. That means we will watch, hungry for every morsel of basketball goodness. Wednesday night’s game should be the tastiest meal yet.
The Hawks welcome the San Antonio Spurs to Philips Arena this week for a meeting with their mirror image. It also pits master against pupil. As I’m sure you know, Mike Budenholzer spent several years as an assistant coach under Spurs coach Gregg Popovich.
Because the Spurs are the Spurs there is always the chance that they will rest key players, especially during the preseason. Nevertheless, this still should be a fun match-up. Any basketball game that features both teams eschewing isolation sets for beautiful ball movement is all good with me. Let’s take a look at a few key storylines for the Hawks heading into this game and for the rest of the preseason.
