It’s NBA Draft season! The Hawks are in draft preparation mode, as the 2017 NBA Draft is less than one month away. Atlanta holds the 19th, 31st, and 60th picks, meaning they have several decisions to make.
Will they look to take proven players that are ready to produce right away? Will they gamble on raw players with high upside? We’ll have to wait and see. This is a deep draft, so they will certainly have a variety of options.
Let’s take a look at today’s articles.

Edmond Sumner Could Provide Great Value For the Atlanta Hawks
Collin Huguley says that the Hawks should consider taking Edmond Sumner with one of their second round picks. Sumner played college basketball at Xavier, asserting himself as a reliable point guard that can score, distribute, and rebound. Sumner would give the Hawks point guard depth behind Dennis Schroder and Malcolm Delaney. The hope would be that Sumner eventually develops into Atlanta’s primary backup point guard.

2017 NBA Mock Drafts: Gary Parrish
Gary Parrish’s latest mock draft at CBS Sports has the Hawks selecting John Collins with the 19th overall pick. Collins is a throwback big man from Wake Forest. He’s a great rebounder and an efficient scorer in the post. Collins would give the Hawks depth behind Dwight Howard and (hopefully) Paul Millsap in the frontcourt. I tend to think the Hawks will lean towards selecting a player with more upside, but Collins would be a good fit.
Why did the Hawks’ Assist Numbers Drop this Season?
Graham Chapple of Peachtree Hoops investigates Atlanta’s declining assist rate. What happened to “pace and space”? Swapping Al Horford for Dwight Howard down low, and Jeff Teague for Dennis Schroder at point guard, didn’t help matters, but there’s more to it than that. Overall, the Hawks were a worse offensive team than they have been in the recent past. When you miss shots you don’t rack up as many assists.
5 potential destinations for Paul Millsap in free agency
At Hoops Habit, Brendan Galella looks at five potential free agency destinations for Paul Millsap. Four of the five teams made the playoffs last season. It’s unlikely that Millsap will choose to play out his career with a team bound for the lottery. Millsap will have plenty of suitors, but has expressed a desire to remain in Atlanta.
Hawks ownership informed Millsap won’t opt in for player option
Chris Vivlamore at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Hawks ownership has been informed that Paul Millsap won’t opt into his player option for the 2017-18 season.
