After recently welcoming former Philadelphia 76ers assistant Lloyd Pierce as the new head coach of the Atlanta Hawks, following the departure of Mike Budenholzer, Pierce and the franchise have announced three assistant coaches have been added to Pierce’s staff.

Atlanta fans may remember Chris Jent, who is the sole returning member of Mike Budenholzer’s staff to stay on and work under Pierce as well.

Jent has been an assistant with the Sacramento Kings in 2013-14, the Cleveland Cavaliers from 2006-11, the Orlando Magic in 2004-05, the Philadelphia 76ers in 2003-04 as well as at Ohio State, which is his alma mater.

Pierce and Jent had a previously relationship, having worked together on Clevland’s staff for 3 years, so his return makes sense.

The two new assistants who were added were Melvin Hunt and Marlon Garnett.

Hunt is a veteran coach and coaching assistant in the NBA, and his most recent gig was as an assistant coach to Rick Carlisle with the Dallas Mavericks. The Mavericks are likely not going to contend next season, but Hunt wanted to move into a lead assistant role with the Hawks under Pierce, which is exactly what his role will be.

The final new assistant coach announced was Marlon Garnett, who played with Pierce in college at Santa Clara University.

Garnett most recently worked with the Phoenix Suns organization as an assistant/player development coordinator. Prior to that, he was with the San Antonio Spurs as a development assistant and video coordinator for one season with the organization.

The Hawks are expected to add two more assistants to Pierce’s coaching staff in advance of Pierce coaching the summer league team in its debut appearance in the Utah Jazz’s summer league.
