Should Hawks Listen to Quavo from Migos and Draft Trae Young at #3?
By Chris Guest
The Atlanta Hawks will have a myriad of draft picks when the 2018 NBA Draft rolls around in roughly a week, including the 3rd overall pick in the draft where the team will hope to find a franchise cornerstone for the next great Hawks team.
Everyone has an opinion on which player the Hawks should select at #3 overall, including Atlanta’s own Quavo from the omnipresent hip-hop trio Migos.
Quavo is a big basketball fan, and was in attendance for multiple Hawks games this year (one of the few people who was).
Not only is he a fan, but Quavo can ball too, as evidenced by his MVP-winning performance in the celebrity All-Star Game, in which he showed his solid handle and silky-smooth free throw form (maybe he could be a solid draft choice…).
Never one to shy away from an interview, Quavo also chimed in with who he thinks the Hawks should take with the 3rd overall pick. Eschewing most draft boards, Huncho claimed that the Hawks should select Trae Young at #3, bringing on board “ATL’s own [Splash] Bro.”
This is not the first buzz regarding the Hawks taking the prolific college point guard (heck, we even wrote a piece about it), but when Quavo speaks the world (or at least Atlanta) listens, so this got a lot of play when he made the remarks.
Of course, it’s not likely that GM Travis Schlenk is listening to Huncho Jack, Jack Huncho or Culture II to get inspiration for his draft choices, but still, does Quavo have a point?
The direction the NBA is going is fully towards the perimeter. Even Dewayne Dedmon became a fairly proficient shooter last season, and even lumbering big men like Jonas Valanciunas, Timofey Mozgov and Aron Baynes could be seen spotting up from the corners during the 2017-18 season (what a time to be alive).
Young is an amazing shooter, and he took some exceedingly difficult treys during his lone college season. He shot only 36 percent from deep, but that’s mostly due to the near-impossibility of some of those shots.
Still though, even the threat of someone shooting from that deep is important, as it completely transforms the spacing for an offense, allowing secondary ballhandlers, cutters and shooters to get open with ease.
On that front, Young was also an exemplary passer with amazing court vision, despite his slight frame. Though it’s been stated before, he led the NCAA in both points and assists – the first time that feat had ever been accomplished.
Young recently worked out privately for the Hawks (one of only four teams he worked out for), and he spent some time with the team, even recording a Hawks on the Clock podcast with Annie Finberg.
News also trickled out about new Hawks coach Lloyd Pierce picking up Young and guarding him personally; clearly the new coach wanted to get a closer look at Young to see how he reacts to certain situations.
Though there are multiple terrific options for the Hawks at 3rd overall, but with the direction the NBA is going, perhaps getting a possibly transcendent offensive point guard like Trae Young is the best option for the team going forward.

If that’s the case, the Hawks will have Quavo to thank.
