Three-Point Shooting

With Lin in the fold as well as #5 overall pick Trae Young, the Hawks will likely have either one of those new acquisitions as the starting point guard in 2018-19.

One knock on Dennis Schröder’s tenure as the team’s starting point guard was his inability to knock down the three-ball. Last season, he shot an awful 29 percent from behind the arc. If the Hawks plan to adjust to the rest of the league, all five positions have to be able to shoot from deep — especially from the backcourt.

The addition of Lin benefits Atlanta because he is 6-foot-3 and can get his shot off on taller defenders. Some people may say the difference between DS17 and Lin is only two inches in height, but that makes all the difference. The former Harvard Crimson star is the same height as Stephen Curry.

Last season, Lin shot 50 percent from three in his only game of the season (small sample size, I know). In his first season in Brooklyn in 2016-17, he shot 37.2 percent from deep. In addition to his solid three-point shooting, he rarely attempts more than four three-pointers in a game.

Lin is very strategic in how he attacks the defense. He can spot up, create his own offense or play off the ball if needed and he is a solid passer. Each year the Harvard product improves on his shooting. Not only will the 29-year-old help the Hawks with his solid perimeter shooting he will also help this extremely youthful Hawks team with his leadership.
