Atlanta Hawks: 6 Most Interesting Wings in 2018-19
By Chris Guest
#4 – Vince Carter
We adored the signing of 21-year veteran Vince Carter when it happened, and we still love it now.
At this point, we know what Carter is, but it’s still remarkable that he can get up for some solid dunks at his age (41). Carter is the definition of a cagey veteran, as he rarely makes mistakes on either end and will serve as a beloved and well-respected player-coach when he’s on the court surrounded by the Atlanta Hawks brigade of young guns.
Despite there not being much mystery about what Carter will provide, his presence on the court will still be interesting simply from the standpoint of seeing an NBA legend and future Hall of Famer in a Hawks uniform.
Sadly, the last time the team had a future Hall of Famer, it was Dwight Howard, and we all know how that turned out.
The inclusion of Carter on the Atlanta Hawks roster should at least provide some late-career moments to his highlight reel, that will now, inevitably, have to include the Atlanta Hawks. And what a highlight reel it is:
Knowing the Hawks will be in that career-spanning highlight vid is a nice feeling.
#3 – DeAndre’ Bembry
In his third season in the league, DeAndre’ Bembry will have to produce on both ends of the floor if he wants to remain in the league – let alone as a member of the Atlanta Hawks.
This razor’s edge should make his season highly compelling, as he has plenty of reasons to want to play his best. Bembry was unlucky last season, as injuries and off-court issues popped up one after the other. Prior to that, the Hawks had little use for a rookie wing during the 2016-17 season, when they were still in the thick of the Eastern Conference Playoff race.
For Bembry to become a productive member of the NBA, his three-point shot will have to be honed to perfection. Bembry is still a solid athlete and his defensive skills are unquestionable, but offensively, he needs to define his role next season.
Bembry should be given plenty of opportunities to showcase his skills, though Atlanta Hawks GM Travis Schlenk was not responsible for the drafting of Bembry, so if he doesn’t improve, he might be a trade candidate next season.
