Atlanta Hawks: Dunc’d On Podcast Crew Talks Over/Unders
By Chris Guest
The Atlanta Hawks were given one of the lowest lines by Las Vegas oddsmakers when it comes to over/unders for wins in the 2018-19 season.
As has been covered previously, the Atlanta Hawks are expected to be one of the worst teams in the league next year, and Las Vegas agrees – as numerous sports books have provided the Hawks with a meager over/under for wins of 24 as we approach the regular season.
The duo behind the Dunc’d On Basketball Podcast, Nate Duncan and RealGM’s Danny Leroux, spoke to this number on a recent episode of the pod, and both agreed that the under seems more likely for the Hawks to hit – rather than the over.
Though we’ve delved into the idea that the Hawks could actually outplay that number, as the team is far more watchable than they were last year, but it is indeed believable that the Atlanta Hawks will lose a lot of games and fail to achieve that meager over/under for wins.
A main framing point of the pod episode is whether or not the Atlanta Hawks got better from last season.
While we believe that they did, just because of the increase in talent on the roster, it is certainly understandable that there is some skepticism on that front due to the youth-heavy roster combined with a first-year head coach, who is replacing a noted tactician in Mike Budenholzer – who vamoosed to Milwaukee.
Much of the duo’s discussion revolved around the idea that Trae Young will be among the team leaders in minutes played, and they both agree that he will be “a destructive force” for his own team in 2018-19.
Another reason for banking on the under with the Atlanta Hawks is an obvious one: the team is not committed nor under a franchise directive to be good this year, as the franchise is fully committed to a rebuild.
Since the Hawks have their own pick in the 2019 draft, they will likely want to lose as many games as possible to all but guarantee a top 5 pick, which could lead to Zion Williamson, Nassir Little or R.J. Barrett on the team going forward.
