Offensive versatility

Per NBA.com, the Hawks are 29th in offensive rating and 24th in defensive rating, so they could certainly use help on both sides of the ball. But the ease of projecting success for Bol Bol with Atlanta starts with his offensive skill-set.

Atlanta is 6th in the NBA with a 38.2% of their shots coming from 3-point range, and get a massive 47.4% of their points in the paint, a mark a figure that is good for 4th in the league. Despite these marks, they do not get to the free throw line a whole lot. This is a shot profile that Bol could fall in line with, especially as he gets stronger over time.

Bol has been an great shooter going back to his amateur days and nothing changed during his time with the Ducks. He shot 52% on a very limited 25 attempts from 3-point range. But to back that figure up, he hit a number of impressive jumpers on the move and hit 75.7% of his free throws, suggesting that his shooting touch is real.

His field goal percentage at the rim at Oregon was 70.6%, not a legendary NCAA figure like those of Anthony Davis and Joel Embiid, but a solid mark that would make his college inside scoring efficiency comparable to that of Jarrett Allen during his lone year at Texas. Similar to Allen, Bol has a thin and lanky body type, and struggles inside with length and effort rather than strength.

With Bol’s ability to score off of catch-and-shoot opportunities, in transition, on off-the-dribble jump shots and (to a lesser extent) post-ups, he could be used in a large number of ways by Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce. Trae Young is devastatingly quick darting around picks (on offense), and John Collins is developing as a 3-point shooter, so the high-low offensive sets alone could help boost the efficiency of the Hawks offense.
