Could the Atlanta Hawks and Vince Carter reunite for Carter’s 22nd and final season in the NBA?
According to a recent report from Chris Kirschner of The Athletic, the Atlanta Hawks are holding open a roster spot in hopes that Vince Carter will return for his final season in the NBA with the team.
Per Kirschner’s story:
“Two sources with the Hawks said Thursday that the team would welcome Carter back if that’s what he chooses to do… The Hawks currently have two open roster spots, and one of them is reserved for Carter if he wants it.”

As you can see, there has been no headway between the Hawks and Carter since the last news regarding the two parties, which stated that a reunion between the two was not likely.
Hawks head coach Lloyd Pierce shed more light on the subject of Carter returning to the Hawks in Kirschner’s story:
“Maturity and character is what is needed in the locker room. Vince was great, and Vince is great because he gives you leadership, credibility and experience. The character piece for him is just off the charts.”
Clearly, coach Pierce believes that Carter’s presence on an extremely young Hawks team would help buoy the team’s spirits and serve as a steadying force in a locker room that will be filled with inexperience.
Sure, younger players such as John Collins and Trae Young will have to take on more of a mantle of leadership, but they are still under 23 years old – as are Kevin Huerter, De’Andre Hunter and Bruno Fernando – all players that can be expected to be in the team’s young core going forward.
Beyond being generally beloved, Carter’s adoration would seemingly be doubled next season, as attention will be lavished on him as he embarks on his “farewell tour” since he plans to retire after next season.
Wouldn’t it be pleasant to see the Atlanta Hawks logo associated with the good vibes that come from the retirement of a living legend?
Let’s hope Carter believes he can get playing time over players such as Jabari Parker or Chandler Parsons because he would be embraced by the city in his final season unlike any other short-stint player in recent Hawks memory.
