Analysizing the placement of the Atlanta Hawks on the FanSided 250 list.

Fansided’s ambitious ranking of the 250 best fandoms across sports teams, movies, athletes, celebrities, comics, and TV is out now. The Atlanta Hawks came in right near the middle, at the 136 spot.

The placement was 16th in the pro basketball category, which also included WNBA squads. They ranked 14th among NBA teams.

This is notably higher than big market teams like the Miami Heat and Houston Rockets, which was surprising. The Phoenix Suns, Charlotte Hornets, Washington Wizards, and Cleveland Cavaliers failed to make the list at all.

I don’t mention that just to rub it in those respective fanbase’s face, but to note that that was the Hawks last season. Improving from “not mentioned” to 136 should be considered a big win.

The ranking also featured individual players, led by LeBron James, Giannis Antetokounmpo, and the highest ranking NBA player: rookie Zion Williamson.

No Hawks were able to crack the list as players, although Trae Young was probably the closest.

It is worth noting that the Hawks were the highest ranking Atlanta team on the list. The NL West winners, the Braves, came in at 156 while Atlanta United FC, 230. The Atlanta Falcons did not make the list.

This is not a ranking of the best fanbases, rather the hottest, or most popular, so the Hawks ranking ahead of the pack could signal a charge in the most popular ATL team, however the Georgia Bulldogs ranked  higher than Atlanta,  but that accounts for all of their sporting efforts.

As for next year, Hawks fans should shoot for higher, as while 136 is nothing to scoff at, they’re still ranked behind 7 NHL teams, 5 video games, 10 college teams, and 9 soccer teams.
