The Atlanta Hawks are struggling with their outside shot. Could George Hill, last season’s best 3-point shooter, be the answer?

Over the past eight games, the Atlanta Hawks have been abysmal from outside the arc with the exception of the wins against the Philadelphia 76ers and Minnesota Timberwolves. None of their players have shot the ball well including their superstar Trae Young. As a result, the Hawks have lost six of their last eight and need to get their season back on track.

One way they could do this is by fixing the outside shot and George Hill is a good option to trade for. The OKC Thunder veteran is not expected to stay with the rebuilding franchise for the season and it is a question of who will trade for him, not if he will be traded for.

While the Hawks have a solid guard unit, Rajon Rondo is not looking like the player he was last season, Brandon Goodwin is good but does not have the same talent as Hill. On top of that, the newly acquired Bogdan Bogdanovic is out indefinitely with his fractured knee.

In a word, shooting. Hill led the entire NBA in 3-point percentage last season. He took 3.0 attempts per game and hit them at 46.0 percent. It easy to shoot the 3-ball when you are a floor spacer for Giannis Antentokounmpo. You still have to have the talent to make them though.

This season he is struggling a little, trying to help lead a young team as well as make the 3-ball with consistency. He is taking 4.1 attempts and making just 33.3 percent of them. However, in a more established system like the Hawks, he will find making shots from deep easier.

Hill also brings leadership and experience to any team that he plays for. Watching him with the young Thunder players this season, he is not afraid to share his wisdom. Another benefit is that he can play the point and also be very effective without the ball in his hand.

He has a $10 million contract for each of the next two years but the Hawks will be able to match that easily. This means they may need to wait until the start of February to trigger the trade when the protections come off the contracts of the recently signed players.

Adding Hill will certainly benefit the Hawks if they choose to do so.
