Atlanta Hawks superstar guard Trae Young has set the record for being the fastest player to reach 400 career makes from beyond the 3-point line. He was able to set this record in only 159 career games, in the third year of his career.

At the end of his third season, Stephen Curry, the soon-to-be all-time 3-point leader, had 372 makes in 180 games. This is a fair light to shine on Young’s achievements when he is only a quarter of his way through his third season.

This means that Young is hitting 2.5 times from behind the line. In Curry’s first three seasons in the league, he was hitting 2.1 times per game from behind the line. While this may not sound huge, when Young hits 180 games, he should have made 450 of his 3-point attempts if the averages run true.

How the Atlanta Hawks need to help Trae Young.

While Young may have been the fastest to get to 400 career 3-point makes, he is going to have to step it up a notch. Currently, the Hawks are shooting the long ball 35.2 times in a game, but they are only making 35.1 percent of them which is good for 22nd in the league.

However, the offense needs to click in order for Young to get more open looks. The other point is the Hawks need to normalize Young taking up to 10 attempts from behind the line every single game.

In order for this to happen, Young needs to improve his numbers from deep. He is only shooting at 34.6 percent for his career where Curry has never shot the 3-ball at under 40.8 percent on a completed season.

The other reason Young needs to make a higher percentage of his 3-point attempts is that after his third season, Curry led the NBA for five straight seasons with 3-point makes. He even made 402 shots from deep in a single season.

If Young is going to have the ability to catch Curry on the all-time list when he moves past Ray Allen next season, Young needs to take and make looks from the outside which are so much better than the ones he currently is. The Hawks will win a whole lot more if he can do this too, meaning that Young will be a fixture in the All-Star game and get similar honors to Curry if he can.
