When John Collins declined his max-rookie extension he showed that he is more than willing to bet on himself. He is a budding young star who has shown the ability to average 20 points and ten rebounds per game. There are very few players who come into the NBA every who has the ability to average those numbers.
During the offseason the Hawks secured the services of Danilo Gallinari, paying him $20 million a season for the next three seasons. They are not paying him this much money to sit on the bench at the start of games.
Now that he is back from injury the Hawks should be actively shopping the big man to see what they can get in return. They may be able to land another veteran who can help this team make a deep playoff run this season.
The Hawks are in a good position here, if they do not get a good enough potential return for Collins they will still be in a position to match offer sheet he signs. If they do get an attractive package they can move Collins for a player to potentially help the franchise both now and in the future.
