Atlanta Hawks coaching candidate No. 3) David Vanterpool

More from Soaring Down South

So often the bridesmaid when it comes to getting a head coaching job, David Vanterpool has as good a shot as anybody in the league. He interviewed for the top jobs at the New Orleans Pelicans, the Houston Rockets, and the Chicago Bulls in the offseason so is obviously at the top of most executives’ minds.

This season, when the Timberwolves fired Saunders, they could have given Vanterpool a chance ass their bench boss for the remainder of the season. According to players like Damian Lillard and CJ McCollum, he is the right man for the job.

They played under Vanterpool with the Portland Trail Blazers when he was an assistant there and can’t seem to speak highly enough of him. The Timberwolves went with the unorthodox move of signing another team’s assistant mid-season rather than promoting Vanterpool as the interim.

Vanterpool is another strong candidate for the role as he, like Pierce, has a good reputation as a development coach. As the Hawks have a young core, this will be beneficial in the coming years. Vanterpool will have something else in Atlanta that he never had during his time with the Timberwolves, quality veterans to help him. He is another solid choice for the Hawks.
