The Atlanta Hawks are moving back in the draft the higher up the standings they go. This is a pretty good problem to have as the Hawks are in the playoffs for the first time since the 2016-17 season. Considering they made ten straight playoff appearances prior to this drought they would be happy to have this issue.

Due to some tremendous performances in the NCAA tournament, the 2021 draft class from pick No. 6 onwards is not set in stone. There is a good opportunity to select a gem with a late first-round pick.

This is where it looks like the Hawks are going to select thanks to the team winning under interim head coach, Nate McMillan. Just prior to the All-Star break they were in the lottery, sitting 11th in the Eastern Conference. Now they sit in fifth, with a chance at the fourth seed in the East, which has they picking in the early 20s.

Who should the Atlanta Hawks take with their 2021 draft pick?

More from Soaring Down South

In the previous mock draft’ by Bleacher Report, they have selected James Bouknight in the first and Tre Mann in the second. In the latest CBS mock draft, they are suggesting that the Hawks should select Jared Butler out of Baylor when they get their turn with the 22nd pick.

This pick makes a lot of sense for the Hawks if the 6’3″ point guard is still available. He scored 22 points in the championship game which helped the Bears to the win. This shows that he is not afraid of the big moments.

He is one of the best shooters in the class and has solid skills. If the Hawks are unable to retain Lou Williams in free agency then Butler will provide a great option as the backup point guard. This would certainly help the Hawks keep scoring when Trae Young sits. There is a lot of water to pass under the bridge between now and the draft.
