If the Hawks cannot secure the services of John Collins during free agency at a reasonable price, would they be wise to get him to commit to a sign and trade? The answer to this would most probably be a yes, but not with the Mavericks for Porzingis.
When he is on the court, Porzingis has the potential to be a difference-maker. He would provide tremendous rim protection alongside Capela, as well as spacing the floor with his shooting from deep. Unlike Luka Doncic, Trae Young is getting his players more involved and Porzingis would be happy in the offense.
However, there are two factors that make this a bad deal for the Hawks. The first is that Porzingis is often injured which makes the second factor really important, that $100 million owed to him over the next three seasons.
While the Hawks currently have the cap space, Porzingis would give them no flexibility and this is going to be crucial, considering they have to extend Young, Kevin Huerter, De’Andre Hunter, and Cam Reddish during Porzingis’s contract.
That is why this trade is a hard no for me.. Given his injury history and massive contract, this would set the franchise back rather than take it forward. The Hawks want to make the most of Young and company while they enter their prime and Porzingis’s issues would potentially hamper that.
