The Hawks did not sign Gallinari to his contract. He signed his deal with the OKC Thunder knowing that he was going to be traded to the Hawks. It is probable that they signed Gallinari as insurance if John Collins decided to take his talents elsewhere next season.
Gallinari just finished the first of the three-year, $61 million deal. He was a little inconsistent at times but then came through to be the second-most consistent Hawks player in the playoffs behind on Trae Young. He was huge in the conference semi-finals series and did not give up in the Eastern Conference Finals.

As mentioned, Gallinari had a slightly inconsistent season. He only had half a season under coach Nate McMillan and almost no pre-season with a new squad. He was given regular minutes after the All-Star break and showed the benefits.
Gallinari also started to show the team that he is really good at exploiting mis-matches inside the arc as well as shooting over the opposition from beyond the arc. He has done everything asked of him this season and also provided the floor spacing for Trae Young which was crucial for the Hawks
