One of the benefits of the Atlanta Hawks extended playoff run was that we got a look at some pieces on other teams who could be on the market after not initially being slated for free agency. This usually means the player outperformed their current deal and, most importantly, has sights set on more money.
One such player could be Bobby Portis of the Milwaukee Bucks. Hawks fans are certainly familiar after the performances he put on in the Eastern Conference Semifinals.
Portis averaged 12.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in 23 minutes per game with a positive plus-minus in four of the six. He also got two starts as Giannis Antetokounmpo missed two games. In those two starts, Portis averaged 17 points and 8.5 board.
The Atlanta Hawks could see a lot of value in Bobby Ports should he decide to test the market

It had been an up and down postseason for the former Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, and Washington Wizards big man. He averaged just 6.9 points and 4.6 rebounds through Milwaukee’s first eight playoff games, posting a positive plus-minus in just three, before being benched to finish out the series against the Brooklyn Nets.
Hard to think that was even this postseason with how invaluable his limitless energy and effort, along with timely offense and shot-blocking, have been.
Playing on a two-year deal, Portis has a player option after this season that could allow him to test the waters with his sights on getting more than the $3.8 million he’s set to make next season. And with the dearth of options in this year’s free-agent crop, he might get it.
Portis averaged 14.4 points and 11.4 boards in seven starts this season, but over his career, his numbers have stayed relatively the same regardless if he’s starting or coming off the bench. That steadiness with the added possibility of an explosion — like his 22-point outing in Game 5 against Atlanta — further adds to his potential appeal on the open market.
He could fit with the Hawks in a multitude of ways, particularly as a backup to Clint Capela, or even a replacement if they are trying to save some money for use elsewhere.
“Bobby Buckets” could also be a cost-efficient replacement for John Collins should the latter find an offer in restricted free agency that’s too rich for the Hawks blood. Collins is expected to have plenty of suitors, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.
His rebounding and extended range make him a fit almost anywhere, to be perfectly honest. And, of course, the lack of free-agent options means other teams will be vying for Portis services. He could always decide to remain in Milwaukee, too. Though it is highly unlikely he stays at his current price tag. That‘s where the Hawks can, and should, take action.
