This is a very interesting option the Hawks can explore. Collins is only 23, has great potential, and is very talented. The Hawks could sign him and see what happens this next year. Then if needed, they could make a trade with Collins being the core piece. This is because he is a young talented player that teams would want, especially if it involves their star player.
Then also what if the Hawks win a championship with JC, that alone may justify keeping him another year. Then when Hunter and Reddish’s deals come up you still may be able to move JC’s salary off the books to sign the other guys. This also gives the Hawks flexibility and can keep all their cards in hand.
Regardless, this is a big decision for the Hawks to make as they try to maintain the success they had this past season. Collins wants to be a part of this team’s future and one of the reasons that they win a championship. He has shown a work ethic to improve his game and to help this team in any way he can.
Schlenk mentioned in the press conference about Collins that players like Collins do what’s best for the team and not just play for numbers. Those are the kind of players you want. Schlenk wants to bring JC back in free agency but it has to be for the right price. So we will see if Collins comes back next year in a Hawks uniform.
