Young has an incredibly high usage rate as the offense usually runs through him when he’s on the floor. That means that he is usually more prone to turning the ball over. However, Young can also be careless with the ball at times. In the regular season, Young had 4.1 turnovers a game, and in the playoffs, he had 4.0 turnovers a game. He was second in the NBA playoffs behind Luka Doncic who had 4.6 turnovers a game for qualified point guards.
He only had 3.0 a game against the Knicks, 3.6 against the 76ers, and then it bumped up to 6.0 against the Bucks. He has to be more careful and effective with the ball. Young should aim to get that number below three and hopefully as low as two a game. This will come with experience and his ability to learn how to play smarter in certain situations.
He has shown the ability and work ethic to want to be better. He takes the team’s shortcomings upon himself, so he is willing to do anything to be a better player. Head coach Nate McMillan will be sure to guide his young guard about all these things, helping fuel Young’s eagerness to be better. If Young makes these improvements, the sky is the limit for him and how far he could take the Hawks next year and beyond.
