The Atlanta Hawks pulled off one of the biggest steals in the first round of the 2021 NBA draft when they selected Jalen Johnson with the 20th pick. It was not certain that Johnson would still be on the board when the Hawks picked because of his talent level. Travis Schlenk pounced, getting another high-quality player towards the end of a draft.

The 6’9″ forward out of Duke played only 13 games last season but he was able to fill up the box score in every category. He averaged 11.2 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.2 steals, and 1.2 blocks in just 21.4 minutes per game.

While 13 games is not a huge sample size, it is a fairly good indicator of what a player is capable of. The fact that he was able to average the numbers that he did in the short time that he played is impressive, particularly given the lack of basketball the season before.

The Atlanta Hawks have a good baseline to start from with Jalen Johnson.

Johnson chose his shots with care during his stint with Duke, taking only 8.4 attempts from the floor per game. He made 53.8 percent of them but that is thanks to his prowess in transition. He also made 44.4 percent of his 1.4 attempts from beyond the arc.

Transition is where Johnson makes his greatest impact on the game. He has good ball-handling and passing skills in the open court which the Hawks are going to use these skills as the season progresses. Now, let’s take a look at the three goals for Jalen Johnson for the 2021-22 season.
