The Atlanta Hawks have had a very interesting last couple of days. Firstly they received news that their superstar Trae Young had entered the leagues healthy and safety protocols prior to the Cleveland Cavaliers game. The Hawks have been really lucky with COVID up until the Young announcement.
Then the league stepped in and suspended the match due to the Cavaliers not having enough players to field a side. This is a good thing for the Hawks who were likely going to lose their seventh straight game, given that their entire starting backcourt and wing were going to be out.
However, given that they now have five days off between games. This is going to allow them some time in the practice facility and get on the same page defensively, which was a big issue against the Denver Nuggets in the last game.
The Atlanta Hawks needed this break to right the ship
Prior to the Cavaliers game, the Hawks listed Bogdan Bogdanovic as probable which is an upgrade from where they had previously had him listed as out. Giving him another three days prior to playing him against the Orlando Magic would help his recovery no end. His return is what the Hawks are in desperate need of.
It also softenens the schedule somewhat for the Hawks. They have two home games out of ten from December 22nd to January 9th. Not facing the third best team in the Eastern Conference at home with a weakened roster will hopefully make this stretch easier.
However, on top of that, the Hawks get to watch their G League team perform in the winter showcase. If they can see even more development in Jalen Johnson who has shown that he is primed for a call-up to the varsity squad.
Sometimes in an NBA season a team can catch a break. This can mean the difference between home court advantage in the playoffs or making the play-in tournament. Let’s hope that the Hawks are able to seize this moment and get their season on the right track.
