The NBA is going through its second crisis in regards to COVID-19. The first one resulted in the season being postponed and a bubble being organized. This one has seen the league allow for fringe players to sign with other teams. This is going to benefit many players, with ex Atlanta Hawks guard Brandon Goodwin being one of them.
He found a new home with the Westchester Knicks in the G League and he has had some success including helping the Knicks get two wins against the College Park Skyhawks. He had something to prove to the Hawks after they chose not to pursue him last summer.
Goodwin was really good for the Hawks last season in games where Trae Young did not play. If he had been able to unlock this potential when coming off the bench, the Hawks would have had a tremendous option at the backup point guard moving forward.
The Atlanta Hawks have their own issues thanks to COVID.
The Hawks have recently had Young go into protocols but were saved from a probable loss at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers. However, their issues do not stop there. Last season’s leading rebounder, Clint Capela, is also in the health and safety protocols.
They also have the Sixth Man of the Month Danilo Gallinari enter the health and safety protocols which has the potential to make life very difficult for the Hawks. Fortunately, they are taking on the Orlando Magic at the best possible time, again, as they are also facing their own issues with 12 players either injured or in the health and safety protocols.
While it would have been a tremendous feel-good story to have Goodwin come back to the Hawks in their time of need, it is not going to be the case. Let’s hope that Goodwin is able to impress the Raptors and he is able to climb his way back into the league.
