Delon Wright is getting his flowers from Atlanta Hawks Twitter
Atlanta Hawks (41-37) Twitter gave guard Delon Wright his flowers. The Hawks have probably gotten more miles out of him than they bargained for when they traded for him in the offseason. A three-team deal sent two players to Boston and re-routed another to Sacramento while bringing Wright to Atlanta.
Wright has found his way into the starting lineup eight times thanks to all of the injuries the Hawks have endured this season.
That is far from his career-high 39 starts last season but is his third-most of the year.
Following the Hawks win over the Brooklyn Nets a couple of nights ago, their fifth-straight which allowed them to leapfrog into the eight-seed, the fanbase showed its support for a player that has often drawn their ire.
The Atlanta Hawks trade for Delon Wright has paid off in spades this season
Against the Nets, Wright finished with nine points all on 3-of-6 shooting from beyond the arc while snagging four rebounds and dishing out an assist. He also came away with his 43rd game without a turnover. That is the most on the team and is tied for fifth in the NBA; both are impressive given his role in the offense.
And yet, while his offense has often been the source of fans’ discontent, it was not the reason they showed love following this one. Just read the replies to this tweet from Locked On Hawks host, Brad Rowland, a long-time Wright defender.
Wright notched two of the Hawks 10 steals. It was the team’s 16th outing with double-digit takeaways. It was also Wright’s 25th game multi-steal game of the campaign.
He sports a better net rating than Trae Young whose performance last week earned him his third Player of the Week award of the season. His 39.6 percent mark from deep is tops among the Hawks main rotation guys.
Positive feedback has been a theme of late too.
That came amid the Hawks eventual 131-107 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers 131-107 and Wright was credited with holding his assignments to 2-of-11 from the floor including former Hawks reserve Brandon Goodwin (1-of-5) and Darius Garland (0-for-2). He was also credited for holding Brooklyn’s Kyrie Irving to 2-of-6 while his other assignments were 1-of-3.
The expectations for Wright were always more miscast than he ever was. His ability to keep the offense moving, shoot with efficiency, and defend is a rarity on this roster.
Heading into the final four games and, then, the Play-In Tournament, Wright is crucial to the Hawks outlook. That was true even as he was removed from the rotation a few weeks ago as Nate McMillan tried to emulate last season’s postseason strategy.
Wright was back in the lineup due to injuries just days later–they are just 1-4 when he sits.
These aren’t the first games he has made a bigger impact than what shows on the box score and they won’t be the last. That is a good thing for the Hawks and fans alike.
