Should the Atlanta Hawks target this Grizzlies free agent?
The Atlanta Hawks face an uncertain offseason. They are most probably going to overhaul the roster, most likely looking to trade for a second star. However, the Hawks are going to need to fill out their roster with quality rotation players because as we all know, it takes more than superstars to win a championship.
The biggest problem for the Hawks is they are strapped for salary cap space and therefore they need to find the right trades in order to improve their positional needs. One of these is the backup point guard position, which is currently filled by the out-of-contract Delon Wright.
If the Hawks can secure Wright then they have one-half of the reserve unit backcourt locked in. His defensive acumen is unrivaled on the Hawks squad and was a big reason that the second unit was so successful. If the Hawks can sign a reserve point guard to take the offensive pressure off Wright then this will make them even more dangerous.
The Atlanta Hawks should look to sign Tyus Jones
While Tyus Jones is not your most glamorous point guard, he is an incredible option to have as a backup. The Memphis Grizzlies have had a tremendous level of success thanks to the talents of their superstar point guard Ja Morant. However, when Morant missed a chunk of games during the season the Grizzlies still won.
Jones played a big part in this. He is an undersized point guard but that does not diminish his impact on the defensive end. He knows where to stand and has a tremendous read on the play. The way that he works around screens to stay with his man is a key to his defensive game.
Jones is also underrated on the offensive end of the floor. He hit 39.0 percent of his attempts from behind the 3-point line this season which is up from his career number of 35.2 percent. The other thing about Jones is he rarely commits a turnover. This could be crucial for the Hawks as they are looking to make a push for the playoffs again next season.
If the price is right then the Hawks should certainly pursue Jones.
