Ex-Atlanta Hawks guard makes EuroBasket All-Star five
The German national basketball team made the semi-finals of EuroBasket and it was in large part thanks to the stellar play of ex-Atlanta Hawks point guard Dennis Schroder. They stated that their goal was to make it deep into the tournament and it is safe to say that they achieved this goal.
With the exception of the first game of the tournament where he struggled a little against the French and the last group games where he sat, Schroder was huge for Germany. He was even able to leverage his tournament play to run it back with the Los Angeles Lakers. His superstar teammate, LeBron James was quite excited when the announcement was made.
Still, the point guard was in consideration for the tournament MVP but that honor went to Willy Hernangomez who help guide Spain to the title. Still, Schroder’s tournament play was recognized as he was named to the All-Star five. He was in some good company though, let’s check out who.
Ex-Atlanta Hawks guard is in good company on the All-Star five.
To put it simply, Schroder was a shoo-in for the five given that he averaged 22.1 points and 7.1 assists over the entire tournament. Both of these averages were in the top five in their categories. The company he is keeping in the All-Star five though is something to behold.
He was joined on the team by two-time NBA defensive player of the year Rudy Gobert as well as the two-time NBA MVP in Giannis Antetokounmpo. The players that rounded out the All-Star five are tournament MVP Hernangomez as well as his Spanish teammate Lorenzo Brown.
While it could be argued that Schroder deserved the MVP as he had less help than Hernangomez, at least he was able to achieve both of his goals this off-season. That has to be seen as a successful tournament for both team and player. The next step is to see how the NBA season goes. We are a only month away from Hawks basketball tipping off.
