Through the first four games of the 2025-26 season, the 2024 first overall pick has struggled to find traction. After missing two of the first three games of the season with a right ankle sprain, Risacher managed just 2 points in 20 minutes against the Bulls.

His opening day performance showed much more promise before this ankle injury, though, scoring 16 points and 2 rebounds in 21 minutes, but that has only brought his average on the season to a measly 9 points and a singular rebound on 44% shooting.

While fans are quick to condemn the second-year wing for his lack of production, this rocky start doesn't reflect the two-way versatility that made Atlanta eager to draft him first overall. Risacher's biggest struggle has been his availability, and these long absences have hindered his progression heading into his second season.

Risacher silenced doubters over the summer with his performances in the FIBA EuroBasket Tournament, averaging 10 points and 4 rebounds across six matches. His availability has not been a major concern, as he was able to suit up for 75 games for the Hawks last season.

What the future looks like for Zaccharie Risacher this season

Quin Snyder has stated that he's keeping "a close eye" on Risacher's workload, citing precautionary measures, but more alarming was his mention of "easing Risacher into the physical grind of the league." For a second-year wing picked number #1 overall, this slow progression is concerning.

It's pretty uncommon to see a prospect so highly touted undermine his expectations this prominently. With the Hawks emphasizing a goal of returning to contention this season, their patience with Risacher could wear thin.

Risacher has had his fair share of flashes on the offensive and defensive side of the ball, but Atlanta's concerns with Risacher transcend the box score. Risacher has struggled to find an identity in this pace-heavy offense, often relying on the veterans around him to command the offense. Defensively, Risacher has been disruptive, but he's shown inconsistent positioning and rotations.

Perspective still matters, though. We've seen stars struggle to adjust to NBA tempo in the past, and it's not uncommon for a young guy to have a couple of developmental years before they truly start to shine. Still, Hawks fans are hoping that this leap comes sooner rather than later, especially with a team hopeful to emerge out of the East this season.

If Risacher can work on his best ability, his availability, and find confidence with the tempo of the league, his combination of size, shooting, and defensive upside will translate in due time. The Hawks' biggest concern moving forward is finding a balance between developing their project guys and developing a sturdy team identity.

If the front office is able to give Risacher the resources that he needs, his production is inevitable, but the Hawks should keep a close eye on Risacher's progression to make sure this rocky start doesn't turn into a lingering storyline.
