The Atlanta Hawks suffered their third consecutive loss Wednesday night, falling 129-117 to the Miami Heat. Despite trailing by double digits for much of the contest, Atlanta received an encouraging performance from rookie Kingston Flemings, who helped give his team a fighting chance.

Flemings finished with a career-high 23 points, five rebounds, five assists and two combined steals and blocks off the bench. His production was particularly impressive considering the Hawks struggled to establish any consistent momentum against Miami.

While another loss certainly wasn't the outcome Atlanta wanted, Flemings provided something worth celebrating. His breakout performance could become an important confidence booster as he continues adjusting to NBA competition.

Flemings showed Hawks another level of his offensive potential

What stood out about Flemings wasn't simply his scoring production, but how comfortably he created opportunities throughout the game. He consistently attacked the basket using his speed and quickness, forcing Miami's defense to account for his ability to penetrate.

Flemings also displayed his mid-range game, an area where he has demonstrated confidence throughout his development. Rather than relying exclusively on drives, he showed the ability to create scoring opportunities from different areas of the floor.

Perhaps the biggest surprise was his efficiency from beyond the arc. Flemings connected on three of five three-point attempts, providing Atlanta with another perimeter threat when the offense desperately needed production.

His five assists were equally encouraging because they demonstrated his willingness to create opportunities for teammates. That combination of scoring and playmaking is exactly what Atlanta hopes to develop in its young point guard.

Quin Snyder may have a difficult decision with Flemings' minutes

Flemings' performance could make Quin Snyder reconsider how much playing time the rookie receives moving forward. Atlanta has several established veterans in its rotation, but productive performances deserve consideration regardless of experience.

The rookie has already demonstrated his defensive potential through on-ball pressure, quickness and physicality. Against Miami, he complemented those strengths with an offensive performance that suggested he could eventually become a more complete contributor.

Of course, one breakout game doesn't guarantee Flemings will consistently produce at this level. There will still be growing pains as he adjusts to different defensive schemes and learns how to maintain efficiency against NBA competition.

However, confidence is an important part of a young player's development. Having success against experienced professionals can encourage Flemings to become more assertive while continuing to trust his instincts.

Atlanta still has several issues to address following its third consecutive defeat. But Flemings' emergence provides an encouraging development during an otherwise frustrating stretch.

If he continues producing on both ends, Snyder may find it increasingly difficult to limit his opportunities.

The Hawks didn't get the victory Wednesday night, but Flemings may have taken an important step toward earning a bigger role.
