The Atlanta Hawks were seemingly headed for overtime against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday after blowing what was, at one point, a 16-point lead.

That is until Trae Young decided to do what he does.

Young pulled up from the halfcourt, with the clock running out, and nailed the shot to give the Hawks a 124-121 victory and snap their skid at three games. Afterward, Young’s teammates sent fitting reactions.

“NAHHH THATS OD [slang for overdose] TY!!!!” Jalen Johnson posted on X on January 7, appropriately adding several emojis.

Johnson missed the contest, his second straight and third in the last four games due to a shoulder issue. But his sentiments were shared by many a Hawks and NBA fan on a night the Hawks got a much-needed win.

More than snap their streak, they improved their record against the West to 6-11.

Veteran big man Larry Nance, who is also sidelined due to injury, also shared his reaction to Young’s big shot, albeit in far fewer words and many more emojis.

Young’s play was set up by a key block from backcourt mate Dyson Daniels. Daniels finished with 16 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks, and 2 steals.

Trae Young climbs another all-time leaderboard

Young had 20 points and 20 assists. The fact that he also had just 2 turnovers aside, he also climbed the all-time leaderboard for 20-20 games, breaking a three-way tie with Tiny Archibald and Kevin Porter to move into seventh place, per Stathead.

He will move up one slot with each subsequent 20-20 game until he assumes sole control of second place with 10.

Young’s shooting efficiency continues to be a concern with .402/.341 splits.

However, he is playing such a more multi-faceted style of game that one can only hope that the efficiency comes later in the season, though history suggests that this will be the norm the rest of the way.

He did enter the night shooting 43% from deep over his last nine outings, so that is an encouraging sign.

It would also help if his teammates could hit their threes as well.

The Hawks are not the high-volume three-point-shooting team they were expected to be coming in, as has been a hallmark of Quin Snyder-led teams. They rank 17th in attempts following their win over the Jazz.

They are also 19th in efficiency, though. And when you allow teams to shoot the three-ball as effectively as you do, it can make for some tight margins.
