The Atlanta Hawks may be narrowing their focus ahead of the 2026 NBA Draft. According to Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, both Keaton Wagler and Mikel Brown Jr. "are two guards the Hawks love."

While plenty can change over the next two weeks, the latest intel offers an interesting glimpse into the type of player the Hawks may be targeting with the No. 8 overall pick. For Atlanta, Wagler may be the most intriguing option of the group.

There had been growing speculation that the Los Angeles Clippers, who own the No. 5 pick, were strongly considering Wagler. However, recent reports suggest that decision may not be finalized, with Brown Jr. also emerging as a legitimate candidate.

That uncertainty could ultimately benefit the Hawks. If Atlanta views Wagler as one of the premier guards in this class, there is now a realistic path for him to still be available when they are on the clock.

For a Hawks team looking to continue building around its young core, that possibility should be exciting. Wagler checks several boxes that Atlanta has prioritized in recent years. His combination of size, shooting, basketball IQ, and playmaking ability makes him one of the more complete guard prospects in the draft.

More importantly, his strengths directly address areas where the Hawks could still improve.

Wagler fits exactly what Atlanta needs

At 6-foot-6, Wagler offers size that many modern backcourts covet. He possesses the versatility to play multiple guard positions while also fitting comfortably alongside other ball handlers. That flexibility becomes increasingly valuable as Atlanta continues building around players who thrive with the ball in their hands.

The biggest selling point, however, is his shooting ability. Wagler shot 39 percent from three-point range during his time at Illinois, establishing himself as one of the best perimeter shooters in the class. For a Hawks team that finished fifth in the NBA in three-point percentage at 37.1 percent, adding another elite shooter could make an already dangerous offense even more efficient.

Atlanta finished the season ranked 14th in offensive rating at 116.1. While those numbers are respectable, there is still room for growth if the organization hopes to compete with the league's elite teams.

Wagler's floor spacing, shot creation, and decision-making could immediately contribute to improving those offensive metrics. Few prospects fit Atlanta's offensive identity as naturally as he would.

There are still plenty of areas for development

Like every prospect, Wagler enters the draft with areas that need refinement. The most obvious concern revolves around physical strength. At times, stronger opponents were able to impact him defensively and force him into difficult situations. Improving his strength will likely be one of the first developmental priorities once he reaches the NBA level.

Fortunately for Atlanta, the Hawks already have one of the league's premier perimeter defenders in Dyson Daniels. Daniels' ability to take on the toughest defensive assignments would immediately reduce some of the pressure placed on Wagler early in his career.

That type of environment could allow the young guard to focus on maximizing his offensive strengths while gradually improving defensively.

There is no guarantee Wagler will still be available when Atlanta selects at No. 8. The closer the draft gets, the more his stock appears to be rising. Still, the latest reports linking him to the Hawks are noteworthy.

If Atlanta truly views him as one of the top guards in the class, fans may want to start paying close attention. With draft night rapidly approaching, Wagler is quickly becoming one of the most interesting names connected to the Hawks.
