The Atlanta Hawks have been connected to Jaylen Brown trade rumors, as the Boston Celtics could make a move for Giannis Antetokounmpo. They would – in theory – be the third team in an Antetokounmpo deal, landing Brown and sending assets to the Milwaukee Bucks. However, Atlanta should want to trade for Tyler Herro instead.
The Miami Heat are the other team that is reportedly interested in trading for Antetokounmpo. They would send Herro to the Bucks, but he could also be rerouted to a third team, and the Hawks should be interested in being that team. Herro could fit in nicely with the rest of the Hawks’ core.
Perhaps even better than Brown would.
Hawks should want Tyler Herro instead of Jaylen Brown
The Hawks have built a solid foundation. They made the playoffs this year. In fact, they won more games against the NBA Champion New York Knicks than any other team in the postseason.
Atlanta won two games against the Knicks in the first round, largely thanks to the shot creation of CJ McCollum. The Hawks need to replace that creation, as McCollum will be a free agent this summer.
Brown would definitely help in that regard. He just made the All-NBA Second Team this past year on the back of his mid-range scoring and ability to create offense.
That’s exactly what the Hawks should be looking for. But instead of trading for Brown, the Hawks should be more interested in adding Herro for a few different reasons.
First and foremost, Herro is – historically speaking – a better three-point shooter than Brown. That additional floor spacing would be very useful next to the rest of Atlanta’s core.
It would also be a lot cheaper for the Hawks to trade for Brown than for Herro. They could potentially keep the No. 8 pick in the trade, as well as some of their depth. Maybe they could even find a way to keep Dyson Daniels.
But the best reason for the Hawks to want Herro instead of Brown is the money. Herro is on a much, much cheaper contract than Brown. It’s much more palatable.
Next year, Brown will be making $57.1 million. The year after that, he’ll make $61.0 million. And the year after that – the final season of his current deal – he’ll make $64.9 million.
Meanwhile, Herro is only making $33 million next season, and that’s the final year of his deal. He and the Hawks would have to agree on an extension, but it would still probably be a lot cheaper than Brown’s deal.
Atlanta should just try to land Herro instead of getting in on the Brown business.
