Onyeka Okongwu remains the Atlanta Hawks' starting center entering the season, but another name potentially connected to the organization raises questions about how secure his long-term position really is.
On The Zach Lowe Show, Lowe discussed Jalen Duren's unresolved situation with the Detroit Pistons and mentioned Atlanta among the teams that could potentially emerge as a suitor.
Lowe made it clear that he wasn't completely sold on the information, saying, "I've heard some rumblings of Atlanta. I'm not 100% convinced that those rumblings are accurate but the Hawks certainly have the need for size. Draft assets to get things done."
That disclaimer matters. There isn't enough here to suggest Atlanta is actively pursuing Duren, but when combined with the Hawks' previous interest in other starting-caliber centers, it's fair to wonder what the bigger picture could mean for Okongwu.
Jalen Duren would continue an interesting Hawks trend
Duren's name is particularly interesting because he wouldn't represent a short-term solution at center. At his age, Atlanta could view him as someone capable of growing alongside Jalen Johnson, Dyson Daniels and Kingston Flemings while immediately providing the size and physical presence the Hawks could use inside.
That makes even an uncertain connection worth paying attention to. If Atlanta believes Duren's strengths could address something currently missing from its frontcourt, the bigger question isn't simply whether the Hawks want him — it's what that potential interest could reveal about how they view Okongwu.
Any individual situation can be dismissed as Atlanta simply exploring the market. Front offices are supposed to evaluate potential upgrades, and President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh shouldn't avoid conversations simply because Okongwu is already a quality starter.
But at some point, the saying "where there's smoke, there's fire" starts to feel relevant. If Atlanta is genuinely interested in Duren, it would represent yet another instance of the Hawks looking toward a starting-caliber center who could provide more size and rebounding alongside Jalen Johnson.
That doesn't prove the Hawks are preparing to move on from Okongwu. However, when Duren joins Hartenstein and Allen as centers connected to Atlanta, the pattern becomes difficult to completely ignore.
Onyeka Okongwu's future deserves more attention
None of this means Atlanta has decided to move Okongwu. He remains a valuable player whose expanding offensive game, defensive versatility and improved perimeter shooting give Quin Snyder flexibility that traditional centers don't always provide.
The concern is whether Atlanta believes those strengths are enough to make Okongwu its long-term answer at center. The Hawks continuing to explore alternatives would suggest Saleh is at least willing to find out whether another player could raise the team's ceiling.
That's what makes Lowe's comments more interesting than the Duren rumor itself. Even if Atlanta's connection to Duren never develops beyond rumblings, it fits with decisions and possibilities the Hawks have already explored.
For now, Duren's future depends on what happens with Detroit. If his contract situation eventually creates a legitimate trade opportunity, Atlanta would have to determine whether acquiring him represents enough of an upgrade to justify the cost.
Okongwu's days in Atlanta shouldn't be declared numbered because of one unconfirmed connection. But if the Hawks continue appearing around starting-caliber centers, eventually those connections become difficult to treat as coincidence.
Duren may or may not become available to Atlanta. The bigger takeaway is that the Hawks continue giving everyone reason to wonder whether Okongwu is truly their long-term answer at center.
