The Atlanta Hawks may have acquired Lu Dort only days ago, but it appears they are already thinking well beyond the upcoming season.
According to Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, the Hawks have expressed interest in keeping Dort "beyond this upcoming season," signaling the organization views him as much more than a short-term addition.
That report reinforces the belief that Atlanta targeted Dort with a long-term vision in mind rather than simply adding another veteran on an expiring contract. President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh has repeatedly emphasized making smart, sustainable roster decisions, and Dort appears to fit exactly what the Hawks are trying to build.
Dort is entering the final season of his contract and is set to earn just over $17 million. However, ESPN's Shams Charania reported after the trade that Atlanta is projected to have at least $40 million in cap space next offseason, giving the front office flexibility to explore a new contract if both sides remain interested.
