The Atlanta Hawks and Okongwu failed to reach a contract extension before the October 19 deadline, leaving significant questions about his long-term future. While the seventh-year center remains under contract through the 2027-28 season, the lack of an agreement makes it difficult to ignore Atlanta's previous interest in upgrading the position.

The Hawks have explored several starting-caliber centers, including Isaiah Hartenstein and Jarrett Allen, while also being linked to Jalen Duren. Combine those developments with the latest contract situation, and it's fair to wonder whether Okongwu will remain part of Atlanta's long-term plans.

Okongwu's future looks increasingly uncertain

Okongwu has developed into a valuable contributor who fits the modern NBA. His improved perimeter shooting, defensive mobility and ability to operate within Quin Snyder's offense make him an important part of Atlanta's rotation.

However, being valuable doesn't necessarily guarantee a long-term commitment. The Hawks have demonstrated a willingness to explore other options at center, suggesting the organization may still be evaluating whether Okongwu is its ideal solution.

Failing to reach an extension doesn't automatically mean Atlanta is preparing to trade him. Contract negotiations can stall over salary expectations, timing or differences in how both sides evaluate a player's future value.

Still, the lack of an agreement becomes more interesting when considering Atlanta's offseason activity. If the Hawks were completely satisfied with their long-term situation at center, there would seemingly be less reason to consistently explore potential upgrades.

That doesn't diminish Okongwu's contributions, but it creates legitimate uncertainty about whether he'll eventually receive another significant commitment from the franchise.

Hawks' financial flexibility could create difficult decisions

Atlanta is positioned to have considerable financial flexibility next summer, with previous projections suggesting the organization could create more than $40 million in cap space. The final amount will depend on roster decisions, but that flexibility could allow the Hawks to explore significant additions.

President of Basketball Operations Onsi Saleh has emphasized remaining financially disciplined while maintaining opportunities to improve the roster. His willingness to make substantial moves suggests Atlanta won't necessarily hesitate if an opportunity presents itself.

That could become important for Okongwu as the February trade deadline approaches. His contract remains manageable, and his skillset could appeal to teams seeking an established, versatile starting center.

Of course, there is no indication Atlanta has decided to make him available. The Hawks could simply allow this season to unfold before revisiting extension negotiations next summer.

Nevertheless, the combination of previous center interest, projected cap space and an expired extension window makes Okongwu's future increasingly worth monitoring.

Atlanta doesn't have to make an immediate decision, but the absence of an extension leaves the door open for several possibilities.

Okongwu remains important to the Hawks today. Whether he's still their long-term answer at center is becoming a much bigger question.
