The Atlanta Hawks have officially requested waivers on veteran DeShawn Stevenson, the organization announced Saturday.

Chris Vivlamore of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution broke the news Friday that the Hawks waived Stevenson, however, the team had not announced it yet:

Saturday, the Hawks made it official:

The move was widely anticipated, and cutting ties with the 13-year small forward clears the way for the Hawks to officially sign off-season pickup DeMarre Carroll.

Atlanta acquired Carroll on July 5, the same day they acquired his Utah Jazz teammate Paul Millsap.

The Hawks quickly inked Millsap to a two-year, $19 million deal on July 10, but had yet to do the same with Carroll, whose deal was worth a reported $5 million over two years. It is now clear that Atlanta was just waiting to cut ties with Stevenson, who was scheduled to make $2,240,450 next season (almost the exact amount his replacement will be earning per year), before officially signing Carroll.

Stevenson was selected in the first-round (23rd overall) of the 2000 NBA Draft by the Utah Jazz. Besides playing in Utah from 2000-04, he also served stints in Orlando (’04-’06), Washington (’06-’10), Dallas (’10-’11), New Jersey (’11-’12), and Atlanta (’12-’13). He was a member of Dallas’ 2011 NBA championship team.

Stevenson is the first player in NBA history to wear the number 92 on his jersey. He chose number 92 because he wore number 9 in Orlando and number 2 with Utah and Washington.

In 56 games last season with Atlanta (31 starts), Stevenson averaged 5.1 points, 0.9 assists and 2.2 rebounds per game, while shooting 36.4% from the arc, 37. 4% from the field overall and 52.2% from the foul line.
