Australian Baller Joe Ingles Drawing Interest from Hawks, Among Others

There are still a few things left to accomplish before the NBA free agency period begins in July, but that isn’t stopping the Atlanta Hawks from looking ahead at options for the team when that time rolls around.

Australian native Joe Ingles is the first name to appear to be getting interest from the Hawks. The 6’8″ forward is currently playing in Israel for Maccabi Tel Aviv and is considering leaving for the NBA this summer.

David Pick of Eurobasket.com was the first to report the interest in Ingles yesterday via Twitter and he added a few notes as well:

The last quote may be the most interesting as it appears there will be a list of suitors for the 26-year-old. Ingles went undrafted in the 2009 draft after being showcased in the 2008 Olympics as a member of the Australian National Team. Since then, Ingles spent four years in the top Spanish League, three of which were with FC Barcelona.

Last July, after receiving interest from the Milwaukee Bucks, Los Angeles Clippers, Indiana Pacers and Memphis Grizzlies, Ingles signed a two-year contract with Tel Aviv. He is currently averaging 8.3 points, 3.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists a game in Euroleague action for the Israeli team.

Ingles is listed as 6’8″ and would most likely play small forward in the NBA. Where he fits with the Hawks remains to be seen as the team could look very different in July. With DeMarre Carroll on a two-year contract, Ingles could slide into the reserve small forward role behind Carroll. He has put up impressive shooting numbers, 49.2% from the field, 44.3% from beyond the arc this season, and therefore Ingles could thrive as a scorer off the bench.

The Australian is still focused on helping Maccabi in their pursuit of the Euroleague title and will evaluate his options after the league concludes in May. The prospect of Ingles joining the Hawks will be much clearer after the NBA Draft in June.
